Blog Tour for RENEGADE SKYFARER INTERVIEW with Becky Metcalf

Renegade Skyfarer Blog Tour BannerWe have the most amazing and fabulous Becky Metcalf on our blog today! In honor of her brand new book out RENEGADE SKYFARER we decided to interview the lovely author. ENJOY!

Tell us a bit about your story.

Renegade Skyfarer takes place in a world parallel to our own, but with magic, dragons, and steamtech. Ben Dubray wakes up there with only the memory of his name, and faint memories that lurk in the back of his mind. He’s pretty sure he doesn’t belong in Terrene, but he has precious few clues to aid him. The crew of the Sapphire help as best they can, but they have their own troubles to deal with–namely, the Barrier–and the fact that this magical wall that has been protecting them from the invasive slavers to the north has been under attack.

And through it all: dragon attacks, political intrigue, a berserker, and a forbidden romance.

Steamtech and forbidden romance? I’m totally down. So, who is your favorite character and why?

Oooh, that’s tough. Honestly? Probably Finn. He has quite the mysterious background, the grandfather snark, and more power than anyone realizes. He likes to walk quietly and carry a big stick, if you will.

Presidential quotes are always welcome…unless they come from Twitter. HA! Is there a villain? Do you enjoy writing villains?

Confession: I love writing villains. Once I have a full grasp on what makes them tick, I enjoy seeing where they’re going to lead the story. A villain doesn’t consider himself a villain. He thinks of himself as the hero of his own story. And that’s something fascinating to play with.

But I can’t say who the villain is for Renegade Skyfarer. That’d take so much of the intrigue and fun away! Maybe I’ll tell more for the next books. ^_^

Totally understand. Don’t want to give away spoilers. Who is an author you’re currently obsessed with?

CJ Redwine! I love her worlds and her prose, and I had the honor of meeting her at a retreat this year. Absolutely beautiful heart, and she even voluntarily donated a signed copy of her book, the Traitor Prince, for my Facebook party! How awesome is that?

Exciting! I hope to get to attend CJ Redwine’s retreat this next year. Sounds like fun! What were some of your favorite childhood books?

Calvin and Hobbes? Lol. A lot of the Star Wars books. The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. The X-Wing series. Kathy Tyers Firebird Trilogy. I loved reading Frank Peretti right before bed…

Nothing wrong with a bit of Calvin and Hobbes. I think we’ve all been there. When do you find the time to write with littles around?

Time? What is this time you speak of? I sleep less than I should, to be honest. Once the kids are in bed, I’m up writing/editing/brainstorming until the wee hours of the morning, and then I’m up when the boys are up. So I average anywhere from 4-6 hours of sleep each night. A far cry from my original sleep rhythm of getting 9 hours of sleep each night.

But once I’m done with this phase of writing/editing, I’ll take a break for about a week. Go to bed early, catch up on some books and shows (Mike has been bugging me to watch Sherlock, and I’ve been waiting for a break between books, so I can dedicate my full time and attention to it), it’s gonna be glorious. And after that brief spell of a break, it’s back to my writer’s hole, I go!

Sounds like a lot of mommy writers. Mt brain, unfortunately, goes to sleep at about nine, so it’s incredibly hard to write after kids are in bed. What author do you aspire to be like?

Kathy Tyers Gillian. Her writing is superb, and she’s been a humble, gracious, warm author to those that are starting out, like me. I really appreciate the writing advice she’s shared, and I can only hope and pray that if I ever become as big an author as her, that I’ll have the same heart of love.

Nice. I didn’t get to meet her at Realm Makers, but I saw her! Glad you had the opportunity to connect on a personal level. Is Renegade Skyfarer a stand-alone or a series? If a stand-alone, would you consider writing more?

Renegade Skyfarer is book one of a four book series. And there’ll be a prequel, anthology, and a stand-alone! Book two, Void Born, will be out this autumn, and the prequel, Betrayal by Blood, will be releasing early winter 2019.

There be no rest for this author! lol

Oh wow! You’ve got so much planned for these characters! How fun! I think a lot of people are excited about a steampunk novel with a male MC. I know I am. Did you base your MC off any person in real life?

Not really. He was his own character, and there may be tiny aspects of his quirks based off real-life people, but there’s no one that comes to mind that I’d say, “oh, yes, he’s based off them.” Ben is uniquely himself.

I do have several side characters that are based off real life folks, but those characters don’t get much page time, as the story is about Ben–not them.

Just for fun, what is your favorite fantasy creature?

This is a hard question! Maybe a phoenix? Or a griffin? Probably a phoenix. Through the fire and ashes, they rise again.

Cool. I’ve never been one for bigger, scarier creatures, but I know a phoenix in the sky would be a beautiful sight to behold.

Thank you for having me here! I hope that my answers were fun, and gave a bit of insight into who I am as an author, and what you could possibly expect for Renegade Skyfarer.

And thank you for joining us at Quills today! It’s been a pleasure having you on our blog.

About Renegade Skyfarer

The airship crew saved Ben’s life from a dragon, of all things.

When Ben wakes up, he has no memory of his family, his home, or how he got to this strange world. All he knows is what his new crew members tell him: the magical Barrier that protects their land is weakening. Unless they find the artifact that can repair it, all of Terrene will be destroyed and enslaved by the enemies beyond.

But when Ben suspects that danger may lurk closer than dragons or sky pirates, he has to decide: stay and fight with the airship crew, or focus on regaining his lost memory? If he leaves, he risks losing his newfound friends–but if he stays, he might never return home.

Welcome to Terrene–where dragons exist, the past haunts, and magic is no myth.

Welcome aboard the Sapphire.

About the Author

During the day, Becky is a stay at home mom of two active little boys. When she has ‘free time’, she enjoys reading, writing, baking and sewing.

After many years of creative writing classes, writing fanfiction drabbles and daydreaming, it was high time to start writing her husband Mike’s story. She dove into the world of Terrene and hasn’t looked back—except for when she runs out of dark chocolate.

Any free time not spent in Terrene is typically expended on hosting dinner and game nights, running amok with the two little monkeys or watching nerdy movies with Mike.

  1. Loved, loved, loved this interview so much! I find writing villains to be interesting as well. I also am SUPER curious about RJ’s books after hearing how good The Traitor Prince was!
